Indonesia, the number one palm oil producer in the world, always puts forward the principle of sustainability of the palm oil industry. Not only providing a large workforce, oil palm management in Indonesia is also carried out through good practices so that it can improve the welfare of the surrounding community and oil palm smallholders in particular.
Based on data from the Oil Palm Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS) there are at least 4.2 million direct workers and 12 million indirect workers from the operations of the Indonesian palm oil industry. Smallholders are the second largest supplier to the Indonesian palm oil sector, managing 40% of oil palm land and are an important part of the country in supplying world crude palm oil (CPO). For this reason, it is important for companies to work together with smallholders to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly oil palm plantations.
Asian Agri managed its plantations with sustainability principle and has established partnership with smallholders through One to One Partnership Commitment program. Sustainability & Stakeholders Relations Director of Asian Agri, Bernard Riedo said that the partnership is focused on improving all partner smallholders’ welfare. The company has assisted its partner smallholders and held sustainable practices training for them. So far, Asian Agri has 30,000 palm oil partner smallholders and is committed to improving their quality of life and supporting sustainable palm oil management.
