Jakarta, 4 December 2017 – Asian Agri, as a company with strong commitment towards the environment, has taken concrete steps to benefit the company and surrounding community by converting palm oil waste to renewable energy.
Asian Agri’s commitment, shown through its construction of biogas power plants in three provinces (North Sumatra, Riau and Jambi), was honoured with a Platinum Award in the Environmental Management Program category during the Indonesia CSR Awards 2017 held in Jakarta on November 30.
“This award is very meaningful to us, and is also a trigger for us to continue contributing in terms of environmental sustainability. We are strengthening our commitment by utilizing the latest technology to convert palm waste into renewable energy, which is useful not only for the company but also for the surrounding community,” said Welly Pardede, Asian Agri Head of CSR and Sustainability Operations.
In the last two years, Asian Agri has built seven out of the 20 biogas power plants it intends to complete by 2020.
With a production capacity of 2.2 MW each, one biogas power plant is able to supply electricity to 1,600 households (if each house requires 900W of electricity) in Indonesia.
As a crude palm oil producer, Asian Agri realizes that palm oil plantations are often viewed as contributors to gases which have negative impacts on the environment, such as greenhouse gas emissions. Such greenhouse gas emissions are composed primarily of carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and methane – all of which are gases which contribute to global warming and seasonal changes.
Due to this, Asian Agri is therefore intent on implementing technology which aids in the conversion of waste gas to renewable energy which is beneficial for all.

All plantations have also been ISCC-certified (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification), including plantation owned by smallholders. Palm oil mills and plantation in Buatan, Ukui, Soga, Tungkul Ulu, and Muara Bulian have been ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) certified.
