Riau, 19th November 2016 – As a sustainable oil palm company that supports oil palm replanting, Asian Agri is committed to assisting its smallholders to explore alternative sources of income during the replanting period.

On 19 November 2016, Asian Agri and its subsidiary PT. Inti Indosawit Subur  conducted training on catfish breeding and post harvest handling to the plasma smallholders in Ukui. The training was held in cooperation with Himpunan Alumni (HA) IPB Pelalawan, at Desa Silikuan Hulu, Ukui District, Pelalawan Regency, Riau. 

Catfish breeding training was delivered by a member of HA IPB Pelalawan, Barkah Tri Basuki who is also the owner of Lele Kabut Asap and Lele Salai business. He motivated smallholders to look for other alternative income during the replanting period.

This training was also attended by Head of Sustainability Operation & CSR for Asian Agri, Welly Pardede; Head of Fisheries Agency of Pelalawan Regency, Ir. HT Wahidudin, M.Si; Head of Silikuan Hulu Village, Sarlin; Secretary General of HA IPB, Ferry Admiral, and Head of Asosiasi Petani Kelapa Sawit Perkebunan Inti Rakyat (ASPEKPIR), Ukui District, Anwar Komara.

“Currently, our smallholders who are in partnership with PT Inti Indosawit Subur in Ukui have entered the replanting period. Therefore, we need to equip our smallholders so that they are able to create alternative sources of income for 3 years, while waiting for the fresh fruit bunch production,” said Faisal, Group Manager of PT. Inti Indosawit Subur. “This training is inline with Fisheries Agency Pelalawan-Riau’s project to increase fish consumption from 35kg/capita/year to 37kg/capita/year,” he said.

The event which was held in collaboration with HA IPB Pelalawan and Sumber Bahagia Cooperatives of Silikuan Hulu Village, was attended by hundreds of smallholders who participated in the activities enthusiastically.

Saimin and Hadi who represented the smallholders expressed their appreciation to Asian Agri and HA IPB for organizing the program.

“I have tried to breed catfish using tarpaulin, but it did not succeed. With the knowledge from this training, I hope I can improve my business so it can be more profitable, and I do not need to worry about replanting”, said Saimin.

Out of 20 mills, 14 have received certification from ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil where as the remaining mills have gone through stringent ISPO audit process. It is targeted to have both RSPO & ISPO certification completed by 2016.
